When Life Gives You Lemons, Put a Peppermint Stick In It

As a little girl I have fond memories of walking around festivals and fairs while sucking the juice from a lemon with a peppermint stick. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than that chalky sweetness of peppermint as it blends with the acidic sour lemon juice. The perfect combination. And, the more sour and juicy the lemon, the better!

My mouth is watering just thinking about it. In fact, I’m think I’m gonna make some lemons with peppermint sticks for the kids tonight since I seem to have deprived them of this experience!

Isn’t that kinda like life!?! Sometimes things suck and life turns sour. Sometimes the acid burns and makes you pucker. It is times like this that you’d die for some sweetness.

Over the past 10 years, my life has had it’s ups and downs. Marital challenges, medical issues, financial difficulties. Nothing too terrible but definitely a little sour at times. There was a time when I would have gone to a deep place of despair or negativity. I have learned to fully put my trust in God, search for the meaningful life lesson and realize my strength through those challenges and heartaches. Learning to extend the same compassion and kindness to myself as I typically easily do for others has helped tremendously.

My peppermint has been accepting God’s love and grace, nurturing my soul through exploring my spirituality and practicing kindness and compassion towards myself.

I know the sweetness of that peppermint stick would not taste nearly as good without that sour lemon juice. So, when life hands you lemons, find your peppermint!

  1. I have been amazed at how you have handled your problems over the years. You have dealt with issues better than I would have. Gee, I think I’ll try a peppermint to sweeten my next lemon!

  2. well shoot, now I want a peppermint lemon. btw, Cracker Barrel sells the kind of peppermint sticks you need for it. …in case you didn’t know where to get your peppermints when live hands you lemons 🙂

    1. I had to drive to Cracker Barrell last night to get them. But they longer, skinnier and not as chalky as when we were kids.
